You have a GoPro, but with all the new features and filming in 4K you also need some more memory, cause the card fills up quick. Larger micro SD cards are a bit more expensive so what type of card do you need?
I’ve been using GoPros for a long time now and the last couple of versions have all been able to film in 4K. The Hero 9 now even records in 5K. This takes up a lot of space on your memory card. Therefore I choose the largest card the GoPro will take and that is 256GB.
I’ve heard people say that if you use a larger card it might give problems with saving files sometimes or you will lose recorded files. I’ve used 256GB cards for years now in the Hero 6, Hero 7, Hero 8 and Hero 9 and I’ve never had a problem like that.
The card of choice for me is the Samsung Evo plus 256GB. It has a large memory capacity, is fast enough to record 4K or even 5K video and hasn’t given me any problems so far.
The micro SD cards recommended for GoPro, the cards that you get from GoPro them selves, is the Sandisk Extreme. Now of course this is a great card to use for your GoPro, but I don’t believe it performs any better than the Samsung Evo and the Sandisk is a bit more expensive.
There are manufacturers that make SD cards that are a lot cheaper, but most of these don’t give the same quality cards. You want to make sure you get a card that will perform great, write at the speed you need and not lose any of your recordings.
Could you use the 512GB card?
You actually could use a 512GB card, but you would be more likely to have issues with it. GoPro states you can't use them, but they do have a 512GB card on their list of compatible cards for the Hero 9. Still, with a 256GB you have about 6 hours of record time and seeing that I know it's issue free, I prefer to use 2 cards if I have to, but this very rarely happens.
The Samsung Evo plus 256GB micro SD will record 4K video at 60 frames per second for hours on end without having a problem. I’ve used the cards over and over again and have recorded hundreds of hours on them and they haven’t failed me once.
So with that in mind I can highly recommend the Samsung Evo 256GB for your GoPro, whether you just bought the new Hero 9 or are still using the Hero 8 or Hero 6. This card will get the job done at a reasonable price.
